What is the bargaining process between U. S. Steel and the United Steelworkers?
- In June the local parties began the process by engaging in discussions regarding Local issues. In July, U. S. Steel and the USW began the process to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement.
- Amid strong steel demand and recent record profit sharing, U. S. Steel continues to follow our mantra: when we do well, you do well.
- Over the next month, the USW will negotiate the terms of the contract with U. S. Steel. Topics will likely include safety, wages, health care, benefits and retirement.
When does the current collective bargaining agreement end?
- The current collective bargaining agreement ends on September 1, 2022.
How long will it take to agree upon the new collective bargaining agreement?
- We look forward to engaging with the United Steelworkers (USW) to reach a Tentative Agreement by September 1, 2022.
What happens if an agreement is not reached by the expiration of the current contract?
- If no agreement is reached by September 1, the USW and U. S. Steel can agree to an extension where you continue to work under the same terms and conditions that existed prior to September 1. However, if an agreement is not reached by September 1, the ratification bonus will not apply.

- You can check this site for up-to-date information on the company’s proposal.
- Please reach out to your union representative regarding any concerns you may have.
What impact will the economy and a possible recession have on our agreement?
- We appreciate the work you’re doing, especially as we’ve been dealing with a pandemic for the last several years and are now facing uncertainty with respect to the economy. We will approach negotiations with the goal of reaching an agreement that helps us stay cost-competitive.
Will our benefits (health care, retirement, etc.) be as strong in the new agreement as they are in the one that is expiring?
